It is no longer news at least on social media that the Federal Government is planning to sell Nigeria's National Assets to individuals, rumor or not, we have decided to educate our readers on the implication of selling Nation Assets, what National Assets are for those who does not know.
National Assets according to google, is a total monetary value of the capital goods and services, including net foreign balance and tangible assets, owned by a nation at a particular period of time , used in a nation's overall economic analysis and planning, these can also be referred to as national net worth.
Nigeria's assets includes but not limited to (a) Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (b) Refineries (c) Nigeria Port Authority (d) Government Shares etc
What is the provision of the constitution in this regard
According to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Section 16 (2)(c) the state shall direct its policy towards ensuring that the economic system is not operated in such a manner as to permit the concentration of wealth or the means of production and exchange in the hands of few individuals or of a group.
What this section of the Constitution is simply saying is that not at anytime for whatever reason, shall the National Assets be trusted in the hands of individual, corporate bodies except the government in the interest of the citizens at large . It is simple, how does Mr A protect the interest of Mr X's children before protecting the interest of his own immediate family and even friends.Therefore, the interest of the citizen's is better protected by the government which they have either through election or appointment/nomination trusted to represent them.
Can the Government do anything contrary to the provision of the Constitution:
This Constitution is supreme and its provision shall have a binding force on all.Therefore, no steps can be taken without recuse to the constitution, it is Supreme and has a binding force on all especially a democratic dispensation.
The last time i check, the current administration is Democratic Dispensation.
