CHILD MOLESTATION: SAFEGUARDING THE RIGHT OF A CHILD

Two men, identified as Adekunle Adesanya and Tolomo Utele have appeared before the Ebutte Metta Chief Magistrate Court on Monday for allegedly raping a 19 years old girl, The accused persons are being tried on a two-count charge of conspiracy and rape, the offences contravened Section 258 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State ,2011 which Section 258 prescribed Life imprisonment for the offence.

I have on countless time written on rape and the punishment prescribed for the perpetrator of such criminal offence, so i feel its better to advise on ways to avoid  being a victim either directly or on one's child.I seek to inform and educate children on their rights and responsibilities as provided by the LAGOS STATE DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE RESPONSE TEAM (DSVRT).

According to Research children are mostly molested by an unsuspecting adult who can come in form of a brother, a friend, a help, domestic staff to the family of the innocent child, so it is advised that extra measures  be put in place to check such occurrence , it is the right of parents/guardian to protect the child either boy or girl from being abused.

Who is a Child?

According to the Child's Right Law of Lagos State, 2007, a child is anybody below the age of 18 years, every child have the right to life, right to have a name, right to education, right to peaceful home and dignity.

What is Child Abuse?

Child abuse is any act done by anybody which is not in the best interest of the child and may hurt or harm a child, this could be physical,or sexual but we shall be discussing on ways to educate the child against sexual abuse.

Sexual abuse is when anybody touches any of your private parts, ask a child to touch their private parts or inserts their private parts or any object into the private part of a child.a child's private part is any area that can be covered with my underwear.

Things a child must note,a child must report to his/her parent when abused and it is the duty of the parent to listen and build confidence in them by letting them know you believe them, it is not her fault that she's abused, if someone touches their private part he/ she must scream and report to you, the need to address non-family members as 'MR' or 'MRS' and not 'aunty' or 'uncle' because over the years the word 'uncle' or 'aunty' has been used in perpetrating evil.
