KIDNAPPED GIRLS,ABORTION & PREGNANCY

I got this question from one of the blog visitors,he asked that...........concerning the girls rescued in Sambisa forest, what is your take on the pregnancies? should they be aborted or allowed.Any legal implication?

I feel there's need to address the topic, Abortion.

Abortion is when pregnancy is ended so it does not result in the birth of a child. Abortion has been a controversial subject in many societies through history because of the moral,
ethical, religious and political issues that surround it. We shall base this discussion on what the law says about abortion in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom.

Abortion in Nigeria is illegal and carries a heavy jail term of 14 years if found guilty unless it is performed to save the life of the mother and child. Saving the life of mother and child is a question of law that can only be answered in court.

The Abortion act of 1967 states that Abortion is legal in United Kingdom which consists of England, Scotland and Wales as long as the pregnancy is not beyond 24th week of pregnancy but where the pregnancy is over 24 weeks and it is seen that it would present a risk to the physical and mental health of her existing children then abortion can be carried out but this must be done only if two doctors consent on the need to carry out the abortion.

Recently in Imo State,  Nigeria under the leadership of Governor, Rochas Okorocha passed into law, the law to be cited as “imo state of Nigeria’ violence Against Persons(prohibition) Law No.12 of 2012 among others, permits women to procure abortion at will.

Imo state has legalized abortion. This law had earlier been rejected by the National Assembly especially as it was against humanity but the state assembly passed  it into law.

This has been rejected by so many people including the chairman Catholic Medical Practitioner Association, Dr.Phillip Njemaze arguing that ‘the law is anti God, dehumanizing and totally unacceptable to the association.

The Glorious Quran and the Holy Bible also frown at it, Quran clearly disapproves the killing of another while the Bible says ‘thou shall not kill’

It is seen from the foregoing, that the law does not legalize, but provides a legal defense for those carrying them out. Abortion can legally be performed when continuing with the pregnancy involves a greater risk to the physical or mental health of the woman or her existing children, than having a termination.

Conclusively, i will advise that the pregnancy be terminated but consent of the victims must be sort, this can be done in line with saving the life/face of the mother from a lifetime trauma.

Thank you
