MARRIAGE UNDER THE ACT

Marriage...........apart from being a union accepted and recommended by holy books it is also given much importance under the act.

Marriage is a formal union between man and woman to become husband and wife,there are other similar acts by adults like living together  this does not in any way become marriage except it is formally done else the law will not give it recognition whatsoever.

I will limit our discussions to the marriage under the act,this does not mean marriage under the Islamic law.church wedding and customary marriage are not valid but they are not recognized under the act which means they will not benefit nor protected under the act.

Act in this context means the law of the land.

No marriage shall be valid where either of the parties is at the time of celebration of such marriage married under customary law to person other than the person with whom marriage is had,so to those men/women out there who think they can rush to the registry to contract a marriage knowing fully well that their partner is already married to another under the custom and tradition,sorry the law will not recognize such marriage,it is therefore invalid ab initio.whosoever,being unmarrie goes through the ceremony of marriage under the act with a person whom he/she knows to be married as at that time shall be liable for five years imprisonment without fine.
