END SARS - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

It is no doubt that Nigerians especially the youth are clamoring that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad be scrapped, the hash tag is seen on all social media handles, before this became popular i remember an Islamic Cleric called my attention to it and sought my opinion on how to report the officers of the Nigerian Police to the appropriate authority as they harass innocent youths in his area by leading them to the Automated Teller Machine to withdraw money after wrongly accusing them, the man further made it clear that the so called officers are so corrupt that they lead the convoy of young boys who engages in internet frauds popularly known as 'yahoo' leaving what they were rightly employed for.

WHAT IS SARS?

This is the Special Anti-Robbery Squad , it is an arm of the Nigerian Police force specifically created to tackle crime related cases in our society , this is just like every other arms like the Special Fraud Unit , Anti Terrorism and Kidnapping to mention a few.

Who can work in the SARS department?

A member of the Nigerian police specially trained to tackle crime can work in the department. This is headed by a Commissioner of Police.

Where can i report an officer of the SARS found wanting?

Any police officer whether in Crime department, Fraud or Anti-Kidnapping can be reported through the Ministry of Interior or The Police Service Commission , they oversee, control and supervise members of the Police force, any officer wanting is taken through the disciplinary stages and if found wanting shall face the law as provided by the Nigerian Police Act which include dismissal, sentencing, suspension etc depending on how grievous the allegation and report of the disciplinary committee

SHOULD THE DEPARTMENT BE SCRAPPED?

I will recommend a reform not only in the SARS department but in the Nigerian Police Force as a whole, so that the citizens can have confidence in them that their lives and properties are being protected . An attribute of a Police officer by virtue of section  340 (F) Nigerian Police Act is truthfulness in handling investigation so we hereby use this opportunity to appeal to the Nigerian Police to live up to this by maintaining law and order, stop the malicious torture on innocent citizens for personal interest.

WE SUPPORT REFORM IN THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE.

See you same time next Monday.

Thank you

Oyenike
